Immigrant groups say racism rising in Alberta as referendum looms

From her home in northeast Calgary, Saima Jamal scrolls through nearly a dozen hateful comments posted online ahead of a Muslim event in the city.

“One person said, ‘Hey, someone should plow into them.’ Another person is saying, ‘Please check their ID, arrest, deport,’” she said.

Jamal, the co-founder of the Calgary Immigrant Support Society — a group first created more than a decade ago to help Syrian refugees settle into life in Calgary — has lived in Alberta for almost 30 years.

Jamal should blame the people who brought her cult to Canada.

Last week, the United Kingdom released an orientation manual for migrants. Among the sage pieces of advice it offered to readers were “never use threat, force or pressure to make someone have sex” and “women can … choose who they marry.”

“If you have sex with someone without their consent, this is called rape,” counselled the manual. “Rape is a serious crime in the UK. You could go to prison, lose your support and accommodation, and it will affect your asylum claim.” Other topics covered included domestic violence and respect for others in public. It’s a quick nine pages. Indeed, Canada could probably make use of such a leaflet.

A 121,800-person citizenship queue is punching a hole in Ottawa’s immigration plan

Pending applications for proof of Canadian citizenship stood at roughly 56,000 in April. By May, they had reached 70,400. Today they sit at 121,800, and the posted processing time has doubled since spring, from 12 to 25 months. This is the fastest-growing channel of potential newcomers to Canada, and it appears nowhere in the immigration levels plan the Carney government cites as proof it has the file under control.

Video of woman dumping garbage into B.C. lake sparks police investigation

Videos being circulated online showing a woman dumping garbage into an Abbotsford, B.C., lake have prompted a police investigation.

The Abbotsford Police Department, in a statement Wednesday, said authorities have contacted people who have posted the video in order to obtain more information.

“Incidents of this nature are unacceptable and can have a significant impact on our parks, waterways, and community spaces,” the statement from the department said.

Inderjeet Singh Gosal says he received the letter on Friday, Aug. 14, after RCMP contacted him by phone in Caledon, Ont.

Duty to warn letters are issued by police when they possess credible intelligence that there is a threat to the life of a citizen. They typically do not provide information on the nature of the threat.
